Are you beginning Pilates for the first time? These beginner Pilates tips will help you enjoy your first class.

  1. Arrive early: Be ready on your mat 10-15 minutes before the live Pilates online class begins so you can relax and prepare the body and mind. If you have any questions or injuries please advise the teacher before the class starts. You can do this by clicking on the zoom ‘chat’ key at the bottom of your screen. The Pilates teacher will advise you of any modifications in the beginning if you have any injuries. We recommend that any Pilates beginner have an online chat with the teacher before class begins.

  2. Dress comfortably: Wear loose clothing in our online Pilates classes that allow the whole body to move freely. We don’t wear shoes.

  3. Set up your space: Have your Pilates band or small weights, and a small Pilates ball ready near your mat. Every week we alternate using Pilates bands and balls. Sometimes we don’t use any props. Don’t forget to put your phone on silent.

  4. Breathing: In Kevala Health's live beginner Pilates classes, we breathe slowly and evenly using the diaphragm. Focus on keeping your face and neck relaxed. Don’t worry the teacher will remind you about breathing and alignment.

  5. Resting anytime: Remember to go at your own pace, especially if you are new to Pilates, and rest anytime that is necessary. It takes time to build your strength all over.

  6. How to brace the core: It’s important for a Pilates beginner to learn how to correctly and safely use the core. Start by drawing the navel towards the spine gently and also a gentle squeeze of the pelvic floor area (perineum).

Best Tips for Beginner Online Pilates Classes

More great tips are below once you have attended a few live Pilates online classes to help you improve more.

  1. Have patience: When we are patient, the mind will open and strengthen more. If we push too hard, the body and mind may show resistance and this can limit our Pilates practice. Building up your practice slowly and mindfully will get you lasting results.

  2. Breathing: Always focus on your breathing, as this gives you more energy and you will perform your Pilates exercises more efficiently and safely.

  3. Mindfulness: In Kevala Health online Pilates classes you will focus on slow Pilates exercise movements to reduce hurting yourself and build more strength. We encourage you to take time to feel how your body parts move, which exercises feel easy, and which exercises are harder. Being more aware in your Pilates classes is important.

  4. Core Activation: It’s crucial to continue to activate the core correctly during our online beginner Pilates classes with combined breathing as a Pilates student. This will prevent back pain.

  5. How will I feel after class?: When you finish a Pilates class you will feel energized, stronger, and a little tired is natural. Always let the teacher know if you feel anything else that you may be unsure about.

  6. How often should I practice? To improve, we suggest that you start with 2 online Pilates classes per week at a minimum. If you can only attend one to start, your instructor can provide you with Pilates exercises to practice at home and build from there. Combining Pilates with yoga will help you progress faster.

  7. How do I know if I am improving? Improvement can be found in many different ways. You may notice that you begin to feel more relaxed in your body. Your breathing improves while exercising and when you can progress to the more challenging exercises. You will feel like the body is toning up more and even some weight loss.
