Pilates FAQs - Beginners, Online & Russell Island

New to Pilates or wondering what to expect before your first class? Here are answers to some of the most common questions about Kevala Health Pilates classes, including live online classes and in-person classes on Russell Island.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive 5–10 minutes before class begins so you have time to check in and get set up comfortably. If you are participating in a live Zoom class you can sign in 5 minutes prior.

What Should I Wear?

Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows full movement.

For Pilates, grip socks (often called “Pilates socks”) are recommended—especially in winter, to help keep your feet warm and secure.

What Should I Know Before Attending Class?

This applies to people who are doing a face-to-face class on Russell Island. If you are participating in Zoom, please have your zoom on ‘mute’.

To help everyone have a calm, focused experience:

• Silence your phone or set it to on silent before class.

• Keep talking to a minimum, especially during beginner classes and during class.

• Be respectful of others’ space and personal practice.

Should I let the teacher know about injuries?

Yes. If you have any injuries, limitations, or medical concerns, please let your teacher know before class so modifications can be offered safely.

Do I need to bring a mat or props?

You’re welcome to bring your own mat. If you don’t have one, there are spare mats available in class.

In addition, yoga and Pilates equipment is available in the hallway for your use.

Yoga in winter: Please consider bringing a blanket to stay warm during colder months.

If you are participating in a live online zoom Pilates, you will need a small ball, resistance bands and dumbbells if you do Saturdays Pilates with weights.

How long are class passes valid?

Class passes are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase.

Can I pause or take breaks during class?

If you need to rest, you’re encouraged to take breaks anytime. Simply listen to your body and rejoin when you’re ready.

What if I’m late?

Try to arrive on time whenever possible. If you’re running late in a live online zoom the teacher cannot let you in zoom room.

What if I’m a beginner?

You’re welcome! Our classes are designed to be beginner-friendly, and instructors can offer options and modifications. Arriving early is especially helpful for first timers.

Where do I check in?

At the Anglican Church Hall on Russell Island, you just need to walk through the front door and meet Jodie. Live online Zoom participants you sign into your Zoom account and add the zoom code.

Is Pilates suitable for people over 50?

Yes. Pilates can be a great form of low-impact exercise for adults over 50 because exercises can be modified to suit different fitness levels and abilities. At Kevala Health, the focus is on controlled movement, strength, balance, mobility and confidence rather than keeping up with others.

Do I need to be fit or flexible to start Pilates?

No. You don’t need to be fit or flexible before starting Pilates. Beginners are encouraged to work at their own pace, and exercises can be modified as you build strength, mobility and confidence.

How often should a beginner do Pilates?

Even one Pilates class a week can be a positive start. Some people choose to practice two or more times a week as they become more comfortable. The most important thing when you’re beginning is finding a routine that feels manageable and consistent.

Can I do Pilates online as a beginner?

Yes. Live online Pilates can be a convenient way to start from home. You’ll receive clear instruction and demonstrations, with options and modifications provided throughout the class. Kevala Health’s live online classes are designed to be welcoming and easy to follow for beginners.
