I recently received a great question from a student: "Why do yoga teachers often cue a straight spine for Boat Pose, while Pilates instructors frequently ask for a C-curve? What’s the 'right' way?"

It’s such a fantastic question! It highlights how different movement modalities often approach the same shape with different intentions.

The Breakdown: Yoga vs. Pilates
Generally speaking, yoga’s Navasana (Boat Pose) emphasizes a tall, neutral spine, while the Pilates Teaser often leans into a rounded, C-curve shape.

However, it’s important to remember these are just tendencies, not hard rules. Plus, while Boat Pose is often held as a static shape in yoga, the Pilates Teaser is typically part of a dynamic, rolling sequence.

So, which one should you choose?
If you’re looking for the "right" answer, I have a bit of a trick for you: it depends on your goal!

• Want to embody the classic, tall "V" shape? A neutral spine is your best friend.
• Want to turn up the heat on your abdominal muscles? A C-curve is a fantastic way to target that deep core work.

Research shows that when we are in deep hip flexion—like we are in Boat Pose—our lumbar spine naturally rounds, even if we are trying to keep it neutral. It’s almost unavoidable at a vertebral level!

Rather than getting caught up in "perfect" alignment, I prefer to focus on what feels best for my students in my live online yoga or Pilates classes.

If you ever feel discomfort in Boat Pose, I encourage you to play with both variations. See which one feels more supportive for your body in that moment. My goal is to help you move with confidence and curiosity, not to micromanage your every move.
