Learning to Accept Your Changing Body
Yoga teaches us to accept our body and changes as we get older!
Learning to Accept Your Changing Body After 50
Growing older is a privilege, yet many women find it difficult to accept the changes that naturally come with age. Our bodies look different, move differently and may not respond the way they once did. During menopause and beyond, it’s common to notice changes in strength, flexibility, energy levels and weight.
For many years we’re encouraged to focus on how our bodies look. After 50, I believe it’s time to shift our focus towards how our bodies feel and what they allow us to do.
My Personal Journey with Menopause
Like many women, I experienced changes during menopause that challenged the way I saw myself. There were moments when I wished my body hadn’t changed and times when I felt frustrated that things didn’t feel as easy as they once had.
What helped me most was changing my mindset.
Instead of comparing myself to who I was 20 years ago, I began appreciating the woman I am today. My body has carried me through different stages of life, raised a family, overcome challenges and continues to support me every day. That perspective helped me replace criticism with gratitude.
Yoga Taught Me Acceptance
One of the greatest lessons yoga has given me is acceptance.
Yoga isn’t about having the perfect body or being able to perform advanced poses. It’s about meeting yourself exactly where you are, without judgement.
Every time I stepped onto my mat, I learned to listen to my body rather than fight against it. Some days I felt strong, while other days I needed to slow down. Both were okay.
Yoga reminded me that progress isn’t measured by perfection. It’s measured by showing up, breathing deeply and moving with kindness.
Celebrate What Your Body Can Do
As we age, it’s easy to focus on what we’ve lost. Instead, try celebrating what your body can still do.
Perhaps you can:
Walk with a friend.
Play with your grandchildren.
Enjoy a Pilates class.
Stretch more comfortably than you could a few months ago.
Balance a little longer than before.
Feel stronger carrying your shopping.
These are meaningful achievements worth celebrating.
Strength Builds Confidence
Movement isn’t about chasing a younger body—it’s about building a healthier future.
Pilates has helped me maintain strength, improve balance and support my posture. Walking and cardio have helped me stay active and energised. Together with yoga, they’ve given me confidence to enjoy life and continue doing the things I love.
Every small step you take today is an investment in your future wellbeing.
Be Kind to Yourself
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to speak to myself with kindness.
We would never criticize a close friend the way we sometimes criticize ourselves.
Instead of focusing on what your body isn’t, try appreciating everything it continues to do for you each day.
Your body deserves care, patience and respect.
Healthy Ageing Is About Living Well
Healthy ageing isn’t about looking younger.
It’s about feeling stronger, moving more freely, sleeping better, reducing stress and enjoying life with confidence.
Our bodies will continue to change—and that’s completely natural. Rather than resisting those changes, we can choose to embrace them with compassion and gratitude.
Every stage of life brings new opportunities to grow, learn and care for ourselves in different ways.
Final Thoughts
If you’re finding it difficult to accept your changing body, know that you’re not alone.
Be patient with yourself. Celebrate the small wins. Move in ways that bring you joy. Rest when you need to. Most importantly, remember that your worth has never been defined by your appearance.
Your body tells the story of a life well lived.
Treat it with the kindness, appreciation and love it deserves.
