Desk Yoga: Stretches to Relieve Neck
Stretches to Relieve Shoulders
Do you spend hours sitting at a desk or working on a computer?
Whether you work from home or in an office, long periods of sitting can leave your neck, shoulders, back and hips feeling stiff and uncomfortable. The good news is that just a few minutes of gentle movement throughout the day can make a big difference.
Desk yoga is a simple way to reduce tension improve posture and help you feel more comfortable without leaving your workspace.
One of the biggest benefits of desk yoga is becoming aware of your breathing. When we’re busy, we often hold our breath or take shallow breaths without realizing it. Slowing your breathing while stretching helps relax the nervous system, reduce stress and improve focus.
At Kevala Health, I believe movement should fit into your lifestyle. Gentle yoga doesn’t have to take an hour—even a few mindful stretches can help you feel refreshed and re-energized.
What Is Desk Yoga?
Desk yoga is a series of gentle stretches and movements designed to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting.
Most exercises can be done while sitting in your chair or standing beside your desk, making them easy to fit into a busy day.
No special equipment is required, and you don’t need any previous yoga experience.
Why Sitting Too Long Can Affect Your Body
Many people spend six to eight hours or more sitting each day.
Over time this can contribute to:
Neck and shoulder tension
Tight hips
Lower back discomfort
Poor posture
Wrist and forearm tightness
Reduced circulation
Fatigue and low energy
Adding gentle movement throughout the day helps reduce stiffness and encourages better posture and body awareness.
Easy Desk Yoga Stretches
Here are a few simple movements you can try:
Neck Stretches
Slowly tilt your head towards one shoulder, then the other. Move gently and avoid forcing the stretch.
Shoulder Rolls
Roll your shoulders forwards and backwards several times to release built-up tension.
Seated Spinal Twist
Sit tall and gently rotate your upper body to each side while keeping your hips facing forwards.
Wrist and Finger Stretches
Stretch your wrists and fingers if you spend long hours typing.
Standing Back Extension
Stand up, place your hands on your lower back and gently lift your chest to reverse the effects of sitting.
Remember to move slowly and breathe comfortably throughout each stretch.
How Often Should You Do Desk Yoga?
Even two or three minutes every hour can make a difference. You don’t need a full workout - regular movement throughout the day is more beneficial than sitting for hours without a break.
Small Breaks Make a Big Difference
Try standing, stretching or walking for just two or three minutes every hour. These small movement breaks can improve circulation, reduce stiffness and help you feel more focused.
