Health Benefits of Exercising with Other People

When people first decide to exercise, they usually have one goal in mind.

They want to become stronger.

Lose weight.

Improve flexibility.

Reduce aches and pains.

Feel healthier.

While all of those are wonderful goals, something unexpected often happens along the way.

People discover they aren’t just exercising.

They’re becoming part of a community.

Over the years, I’ve seen friendships grow, confidence return and people leave class smiling—not just because of the exercise, but because of the connections they’ve made.

Sometimes the greatest benefit isn’t what happens to your body.

It’s what happens to your heart and mind.

We were never meant to do life alone

Human beings are naturally social.

We thrive when we feel connected.

As life changes, however, those opportunities to connect can become fewer.

Children grow up.

People retire.

Friends move away.

Busy lives and caring responsibilities can leave us feeling isolated without even realising it.

Joining a regular exercise class creates a simple reason to get out of the house, see familiar faces and enjoy time with others.

Exercise becomes something you look forward to

When you know friendly people are expecting to see you, it’s often much easier to turn up.

It’s no longer just another workout on your to-do list.

It’s catching up with people who genuinely care.

Many people tell me they come for the exercise but stay because of the welcoming atmosphere.

Confidence grows naturally

Walking into a class for the first time can feel intimidating.

Almost everyone feels a little nervous.

The wonderful thing about supportive classes is that those nerves usually disappear quite quickly.

You realise everyone started somewhere.

Nobody expects perfection.

Each week you become a little more confident—not only in your movement, but in yourself.

Encouragement makes a difference

There will always be days when motivation is low.

That’s perfectly normal.

Having people around you who smile, encourage you and celebrate your progress can make all the difference.

Sometimes all we need is someone to say,

“You’re doing great.”

Those few words can give us the confidence to keep going.

Laughter is good for your health too

Exercise doesn’t always have to be serious.

A laugh during class can reduce stress, lift your mood and remind you that movement should also be enjoyable.

Some of the happiest moments happen when everyone laughs together after getting a movement slightly wrong.

No one minds.

In fact, it often makes the class even more memorable.

Accountability without pressure

It’s much easier to skip exercise when nobody knows you’re missing.

When you regularly attend a class, people notice when you’re away.

Not because they’re checking up on you, but because they genuinely care.

That gentle sense of accountability often helps people stay consistent without feeling pressured.

Mental wellbeing matters just as much

We often talk about exercise improving muscles, bones and heart health.

Those benefits are incredibly important.

But regular social connection can also support emotional wellbeing.

Many people leave class feeling calmer, lighter and more positive than when they arrived.

Movement, breathing, conversation and shared experiences all play a role.

Healthy ageing is about more than fitness

As we age, maintaining social connections becomes increasingly important.

Research consistently shows that staying socially connected is linked with better overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Looking after our emotional health is every bit as important as looking after our physical health.

Exercise classes can support both.

A note from Jodie

One of the things I love most about teaching isn’t counting repetitions or correcting technique.

It’s watching people grow.

I’ve seen complete beginners arrive feeling nervous and unsure of themselves.

Over time, I’ve watched those same people become stronger, laugh more, encourage others and welcome new faces into the class.

That’s what makes teaching so rewarding.

Creating a space where everyone feels supported, accepted and comfortable to move at their own pace has always been at the heart of Kevala Health.

Final thoughts

Exercise is about far more than burning calories.

It’s about building strength.

Improving balance.

Supporting your heart.

Reducing stress.

And sometimes, it’s simply about sharing a smile with someone who understands your journey.

If you’ve been thinking about joining a class but have been feeling nervous, remember that every single person was once new.

You don’t need to be fit before you begin.

You simply need to take that first step.

You may come looking for better health…

…but you might just leave with new friendships as well.
