Can You Start Yoga if You Have Hip Pain?

Hip discomfort doesn’t mean yoga is off limits. In many cases, the right type of yoga—with the right modifications—can help you move more comfortably while building confidence in your body.
You’re Not Alone
If you’ve ever felt discomfort in your hips during yoga, you’re certainly not alone.
Many beginners over 50 experience hip stiffness or soreness and wonder if yoga is making things worse.
The truth is, yoga should never be painful.
The goal isn’t to push your hips into deep stretches.
The goal is to help your body move comfortably and safely.
My Approach to Teaching
One of the things I love most about teaching beginner yoga is showing people that every pose can be adapted.
No two bodies are the same.
Some people have tight hips.
Some have arthritis.
Others have had hip replacements or old injuries.
That’s why I always encourage students to work within their own comfortable range of movement.
Yoga isn’t about copying the person next to you.
It’s about respecting your own body.
Why Do Hips Become Tight or Sore?
Our hips do an enormous amount of work every day.
As we age, they can become stiffer for many reasons, including:
Sitting for long periods.
Weak glute muscles.
Tight hip flexors.
Arthritis.
Previous injuries.
Reduced mobility.
Everyday wear and tear.
Sometimes the discomfort comes from muscles.
Other times it may come from the joint itself.
Understanding the difference helps you move more wisely.
More Stretch Isn’t Always Better
One of the biggest myths in yoga is that you should stretch as deeply as possible.
In reality, pushing too far into a hip stretch can sometimes make discomfort worse.
Gentle, controlled movement is usually far more beneficial than forcing flexibility.
Remember…
Your body responds best to patience.
Helpful Modifications for Hips in Yoga
Simple adjustments can make a huge difference.
You might try:
Sitting on a folded blanket or bolster.
Using yoga blocks for support.
Keeping a gentle bend in your knees.
Making your stance a little smaller.
Reducing the depth of the stretch.
Taking extra time to move slowly.
These modifications don’t make the pose “easier.”
They make it more suitable for your body.
Strength Is Just as Important
Many people focus only on stretching their hips.
But strong muscles help support healthy joints.
That’s why I often recommend combining yoga with Pilates.
Pilates helps strengthen:
Glutes.
Core muscles.
Hip stabilizers.
Leg muscles.
Yoga improves:
Mobility.
Balance.
Flexibility.
Body awareness.
Together they create a wonderful combination for healthy ageing.
Listen to Your Body
Yoga teaches one of the most valuable skills of all:
Learning to listen.
A gentle stretch may feel comfortable.
Sharp pain, pinching or increasing discomfort is your body’s way of saying,
“Let’s try something different.”
There is no benefit in pushing through pain.
When Should You Seek Medical Advice?
If your hip pain is severe, getting worse, follows a fall or injury, or is accompanied by symptoms such as significant swelling, fever, or difficulty putting weight on your leg, it’s important to seek medical assessment before starting or continuing an exercise program.
For ongoing hip conditions, your healthcare professional can advise on what’s appropriate for you, and your yoga practice can often be adapted around that advice.
It’s Never Too Late to Start
Many of my students begin yoga because they want to move with less stiffness and more confidence.
The wonderful thing about beginner yoga is that it meets you exactly where you are today.
You don’t need flexible hips.
You don’t need perfect movement.
You simply need a willingness to begin.
Small improvements soon become noticeable.
And every gentle movement is helping you invest in your future wellbeing.
Final Thoughts
Your hips carry you through life every single day.
Treat them with kindness.
Move gently.
Use the support you need.
Celebrate every small improvement.
Healthy ageing isn’t about forcing your body into uncomfortable positions.
It’s about discovering how good movement can feel when it’s adapted to suit you.
I’d love to help you begin that journey.
